2009 Tax Calendar

December 31, 2008

  • Final day for 2008 tax planning.

January 15, 2009

  • 4th quarter estimated tax payments due for 2008 tax year.

January 31, 2009

  • Deadline for employers to mail out W-2 and 1099 Statements.
  • Deadline for employers to file Form 940, federal unemployment tax returns.
  • Deadline for employers to file Form 941 for income tax withholdings & FICA taxes for fourth quarter 2007.

February 15, 2009

  • Deadline for employees who claim exemption from withholding to file a new Form W-4 to their employers.

February 29, 2009

  • Deadline for employers to file W-2 and 1099 Statements with the Social Security Administration if filing on paper or magnetic media. Remember for 1099-MISC, you are only required to file for services over $600 and products over $1,000 for non corporate vendors.

March 3, 2009

  • Deadline for farmers and fishermen who have a balance due on their taxes to file their individual tax return and pay the balance due without any late payment penalties.

March 16, 2009

  • Deadline for corporate tax returns (Forms 1120, 1120A, 1120S, 1120F, 5471, 5472, ), or to request automatic 6-month extension of time to file (Form 7004).
  • Deadline for filing Form 5452 for non taxable corporate distributions.

March 31, 2009

  • Deadline for employers to file W-2 and 1099 Statements with the Social Security Administration if filing electronically.

April 15, 2009

  • Deadline to file individual tax returns (Form 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ) or to request an Automatic Extension. Automatic extension this year is for 6 months this year instead of 4 months.
  • Last day to make contribution to traditional IRA, Roth IRA, or SEP-IRA for 2007 tax year unless extended.
  • 1st quarter estimated tax payments due for 2008 tax year.
  • Deadline to file estate or trust tax returns (Form 1041) or to request an automatic 6-month extension of time to file (Form 7004).
  • Deadline to file partnership tax returns (Form 1065) or to request an automatic 6-month extension of time to file (Form 7004).
  • Final deadline for estates, trusts, or partnerships to file an amended tax return and still claim a tax refund for the year 2005.

April 30, 2009

  • Deadline for employers to file Form 941 for income tax withholdings & FICA taxes for first quarter 2008.

May 15, 2009

  • Deadline for non-profit organizations to file information returns (Form 990), or request an extension (Form 8868) if calendar year.

June 16, 2009

  • 2nd quarter estimated tax payments due for 2009 tax year.
  • Deadline for US citizens living abroad to file individual tax returns or to request an additional 4-month extension (Form 4868). (Tip: request an automatic extension by April 17th, 2009, instead.)

June 31, 2009

  • Deadline for employers to file Form 941 for income tax withholdings & FICA taxes for second quarter 2008.

September 15, 2009

  • 3rd quarter estimated tax payments due for 2009 tax year.
  • Final deadline to file corporate tax returns (Forms 1120, 1120A, 1120S).

October 15, 2009

  • Final deadline to file individual tax returns (with extension).
  • Final day for e-file.
  • Final deadline to file trust tax returns (Form 1041) if an extension was requested.
  • Final deadline to file partnership tax returns (Form 1065) if an extension was requested.

October 31, 2009

  • Deadline for employers to file Form 941 for income tax withholdings & FICA taxes for third quarter 2009.

November 1, 2009

  • Start planning any year-end tax moves.

December 31, 2009

  • Last day to make any 2009 tax year moves.
  • Marital status on this date determines your marital status for the whole year.

February 2, 2010

  • Deadline for employers to file Form 941 for income tax withholdings & FICA taxes for fourth quarter 2009.

Tips For Victims of Identity Theft

The following are recommended actions for victims of identity theft:

  • Contact the fraud departments of the three major credit bureaus. Ask to have your credit file flagged with a fraud alert that includes a statement asking creditors to call you before opening new accounts in your name.
  • Contact all creditors by phone and in writing to inform them of the problem.
  • Call your local police and the nearest U.S. Postal Inspection Service to report the crime.
  • Keep a log of all your contacts with creditors and authorities and make copies of all documents.
  • Contact the state office of the Department of Motor Vehicles to learn whether another driver's license was issued in your name.
